Why these stories matter

The best way to picture your trip is through someone else’s.

Every journey on this page was designed by our team and led by our own local guides. The photos were taken on the road — at dawn on the Great Wall, inside the Terracotta Warriors pit, over a Sichuan hotpot — and the words come straight from the travelers who lived them.

You’ll see how families keep children engaged, how couples set the pace, and how friends move between ancient capitals, wild landscapes and neon-lit cities. When you’re ready, we’ll build the same kind of trip around you.

Three trips, three ways to see China

A closer look at the routes our guests actually traveled — with the moments that stayed with them.

JOURNEY 01

A family’s first China — emperors, warriors and pandas

Family of four
12 days
Beijing · Xi’an · Chengdu

The Robertsons wanted the classics without exhausting their children, ages 8 and 11. We opened with a quiet morning on the Great Wall before the crowds, rode the bullet train west to stand before the Terracotta Army, and finished in Chengdu with a panda-keeper morning.

Pace stayed gentle: short walks, a cable car on the wall, a dumpling lunch in a hutong, and hotels with pools. Their guide handled every ticket and transfer so the parents could simply watch their kids’ reactions.

The kids talked about the pandas for weeks, but the morning we had the Great Wall almost to ourselves is what my husband and I keep remembering.

JOURNEY 02

Slow days, big views — from the Great Wall to the Guilin peaks

Couple in their 30s
10 days
Beijing · Guilin · Yangshuo

Daniel and Chloe asked for romance, scenery and good food rather than a checklist. After the Mutianyu Great Wall at sunset, they flew south to slow right down: a Li River cruise, bamboo rafts on the Yulong, and bicycles through rice fields.

Days ended at small local tables — beer fish in Yangshuo, noodles by the river — with no fixed schedule beyond the light.

We cycled past rice fields and drifted through those peaks on a raft. It was somehow even more beautiful than the photos — and that’s saying something.

JOURNEY 03

Chasing the ‘Avatar’ mountains, ending in Shanghai

Three friends
9 days
Zhangjiajie · Shanghai

Three friends came for the landscapes that inspired Avatar and stayed for the contrast. In Zhangjiajie they hiked the quartz pillars, crossed the record-breaking glass bridge and rode cable cars through the clouds.

A short flight delivered them to a completely different China — Shanghai’s Art Deco waterfront, rooftop views over the Bund and one very long final dinner.

Walking that glass bridge over the canyon felt unreal — and then Shanghai’s skyline hit us at night like a movie set. The two together blew us away.

We booked the panda-keeper morning on a whim and ended up sitting with a year-old cub. I still can’t believe it actually happened.

Our teenagers actually put their phones down. That alone tells you the kind of trip this was.

David ThompsonNew Zealand · Family, 12 days

The panda-keeper morning was the best travel day of my life. I’d fly back just for that.
